Cassina Acquires Italian Furniture Brand Zanotta

Italian furniture brand Zanotta has been acquired by Cassina, a company under the US-owned Haworth Lifestyle Design group, from its previous owner, Tecno. Cassina’s acquisition aims to leverage its extensive international distribution network to enhance Zanotta’s global presence while ensuring that Zanotta maintains autonomy over its product line, which includes iconic designs like the Mazzandro stool by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni.

“We will ensure significant operational independence for this remarkable brand so it can continue its creative evolution by exploring new talent and enriching its exceptional product portfolio,” stated Cassina CEO Luca Fuso. He added, “Zanotta, like Cassina, boasts a rich history defined by iconic products. I believe the brand has immense potential and deserves to be recognized worldwide.”

Founded in 1954 by Aurelio Zanotta, the brand initially focused on producing soft furnishings such as sofas and armchairs, which were predominantly crafted in upholstery workshops at the time. Zanotta gained prominence in the early 1970s by reproducing iconic designs by Italian rationalist architect Giuseppe Terragni, including the Lariana and Follia chairs. Over the years, the brand has collaborated with renowned designers and architects such as Gae Aulenti, Ettore Sottsass, and the avant-garde architecture group Super studio.

In 2017, Tecno became the majority stakeholder in Zanotta, intending to expand both brands’ access to international markets. Today, Zanotta’s products are available in 700 stores across 50 countries, with further international expansion planned under Cassina’s leadership.

Giuliano Mosconi, CEO of the Tecno/Zanotta group, expressed confidence in the move, stating, “After years of intensive work bringing Zanotta back into the spotlight, I am pleased that this extraordinary company will continue its journey with a significant player like Cassina, who will help it realize its full potential.”

This acquisition is part of a broader trend of consolidation in the Italian furniture industry. Haworth Lifestyle Design, which acquired a majority stake in Cassina in 2014, has also integrated other heritage brands like Cappellini and Alias into its portfolio, alongside luxury design brands such as Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Bentley, and Bugatti. Giulio Cappellini, creative director of Cappellini, highlighted the importance of these consolidations, noting that they provide the necessary resources to promote Italian design products on a global scale.
