A refreshing dose of relaxed nostalgia for the modern day has been brought to Sydney’s Superfreak café by Australian-based design studio YSG, given it a fresh 1970s inspired aesthetic. The spot is located in Marrickville, occupying the street front of a building that had once been converted from an ice cream factory into a pilates studio, the studio located at the rear.
In YSG’s renovation, a palette of pale sandy yellows, avocado greens, and earthy brown tones ensures the place feels like the 1970s. At the heart of the redesign is a large U-shaped timber banquette upholstered with soft brown carpet – a must-have for the decade’s interiors. The maple joinery-built seating unit features integrated storage and a built-in record player to emphasize the retro theme.
The interior of the café is complemented by checked brown and green curtains, vintage furniture, a low, tile-clad wooden table coupled with timber dining chairs via 1stDibs. The overall design concept is thought to make the seating with carpet and cork flooring feel like a relaxed retreat where locals and pilates students alike can relax after their classes.
YSG director Yasmine Saleh Ghoniem says, “Our clients wanted a place for people to feel the locals could hang out, and also a welcoming space for students to stretch comfortably.” It was achieved with the assistance of sunken lounge-style banquettes providing an enclosed seating area.
Replacing the once all-white walls of decor, the design applied high-gloss green paint to the walls and ceiling around the timber service counter. Finally, a statement lamp from an American artist Autumn Casey evokes that classic feel of a Tiffany lamp sitting atop the wooden counter.
The lighting design incorporates rice paper lanterns, old sconces, and an angular wall lamp from Olivia Bossy. All those very minute details just keep making the ambiance warm and welcoming for that café. The same brown carpeting material is used on the outer side of the open kitchen counter high stools’ seats. Further, the ceiling with shelves on it mounted on top of the counter are painted in green with a high gloss finish.
The back-of-the-bar concealed storage and refrigeration space is framed by a mural of a lush green garden scene by Creative Finish, set off by a gold-toned corner mirror. A brown carpet was originally indicated for the floor, but YSG preferred to install cork flooring here for acoustic benefits and hospitality suitability. Vintage appeal is also applied throughout the front elevation by using green paintwork and coffee hatch for take-away orders.
